United Basic Economy Fare Restrictions

United has announced Basic Economy Fares for select domestic markets. These will be the lowest fares in those markets and as such, the special terms and conditions listed at the link must be advised to customers that purchase these discounted restricted fares. Basic Economy has Some important restrictions which are distinct from our standard United Economy fares. While you will still enjoy the same inflight services - such as food and beverages, United Wi-Fi and inflight entertainment - we want to make sure you are aware of the following Basic Economy restrictions:

Terms & Conditions:

  • Seats are assigned prior to boarding, and customers traveling together, including families, will not be able to sit together. You will also not be eligible to purchase Economy Plus seating or premium cabin upgrades, or receive Economy Plus subscription benefits. With standard Economy, customers traveling together can choose seats together if open seats are available.
  • You're allowed a small personal item, such as a shoulder bag, purse or laptop bag or other small item, 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm) or less. Full-sized carry-on bags are not allowed except for MileagePlus Premier members, primary cardmembers of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card, and Star Alliance™ Gold members. Must be a primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card at time of Check-in. Mobility aids and other assistive devices are also permitted.

    If you're traveling on a Basic Economy fare and bring a full-sized carry-on bag to the gate, you'll be subject to the applicable checked bag fee plus a $25 gate handling service charge. Full-sized carry-on bags are still allowed for MileagePlus® Premier members, primary cardmembers of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card and Star Alliance™ Gold members. Payment by credit card only.
  • Fares are nonrefundable. Ticket changes are not allowed, even for Premier members. This includes advance changes and same-day changes on the day of travel.
  • MileagePlus members will not earn Premier qualifying dollars, Premier qualifying miles, Premier qualifying segments or lifetime miles, or earn toward the four-segment minimum. They Will still earn award miles based on the fare and their MileagePlus status.
